QDENGA: India’s First Dengue Vaccine Explained

What is QDENGA?

How Effective is QDENGA?

Takeda tested the vaccine through a large clinical trial program covering 19 studies and more than 28,000 participants. Research shows that QDENGA:

• Offers 84% protection against dengue-related hospitalizations.
• Provides 61% protection against symptomatic dengue.
• Effective for both people with previous dengue infection and those who have never had dengue.

That hospitalization number is probably the most important one. The real danger of dengue is not just the fever and body pain most people get. To make sure QDENGA can reach enough people in India, Takeda partnered with Biological E, a vaccine maker based in Hyderabad, back in 2024 to expand local manufacturing. This local production is expected to help with both supply and cost once the vaccine is widely available.

What This Vaccine Does Not Do

• No vaccine is 100 percent effective, and with only 80 percent efficacy, some infections are inevitable despite vaccination, necessitating continued caution during dengue season.
• Rollout details are still coming. Approval means the vaccine can now legally be sold and given in India, but pricing, availability at clinics and hospitals, and any government vaccination programs are expected to be worked out over the coming months.
• Age limits apply. Right now it is approved for people aged 4 to 60. Very young children and elderly people, who can also get seriously ill from dengue, are not covered under this approval yet.
