What is the Australian Intern Pharmacist written Exam for pharmacy students?

The Australian intern written Exam is a nationally administered exam conducted by the Australian Pharmacy Council. It forms an essential step for the further general registration process for the aspiring pharmacist intern.

This Exam is designed to assess the intern’s ability to apply clinical knowledge and skills in real-world, practice-based scenarios. It primarily tests competence in the pharmacy practice.

Elite Expertise allows students lifetime access to course materials to help them prepare for their exams without additional fees. Elite Expertise organizes free webinars and seminars to educate on pharmacy licensure and career options. Hundreds of students from Elite Expertise are now licensed pharmacists across various countries.

The APC blueprint of the Exam gives an idea about the competencies evaluated. They are:

  • Clinical pharmacy: managing common conditions, pharmacotherapy, adverse effects
  • Legal and ethical practice: dispensing regulations, PBS knowledge, documentation
  • Communication and counselling: Patient safety, cultural competency
  • Calculations: Dosage, conversions, compounding
  • Drug interactions: safety, contraindications, monitoring parameters

The Australian Intern Written Examination is a computer-based assessment designed to evaluate pharmacy interns’ readiness for general registration. The Exam lasts 2 hours and includes 75 multiple-choice questions, of which 67 are scored and 8 are unscored trial questions used for future exam development. These unscored items are randomly placed and indistinguishable from the scored ones. Candidates are given a 15-minute interface tutorial before the Exam begins to familiarize themselves with the exam platform. This structure ensures a fair and standardized evaluation of candidates’ clinical knowledge and application skills.

In addition to the written Exam, completion of supervised practice hours and passing oral exams are also essential steps in the registration process for aspiring pharmacists in Australia.

Candidates must complete 75% of their approved supervised practice hours to sit for the Australian Intern Pharmacist Oral Exam. Since October 2020, the Pharmacy Board has reduced the practice hours from 1824 to 1575 hours due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Australian intern pharmacist oral exam has three parts: primary healthcare, legal and ethical practice, and problem-solving and communication.

The total duration of the intern oral exam is approximately 35 minutes. Candidates can refer to any books or materials during Part C of the oral Exam, which focuses on problem-solving. Effective communication with healthcare professionals is a crucial skill assessed in the oral Exam. The oral exam durations are approximately 10 minutes for Part A, 5 minutes for Part B, and 20 minutes for Part C.

The Pharmacy Board of Australia conducts the intern pharmacist oral exam three times a year: in February, July, and October.

The Intern written Exam ensures that aspiring pharmacists are job-ready, safe, and competent to practice independently in Australia’s healthcare system. The oral exams are conducted in various cities across Australia to ensure accessibility for candidates.

The Australian intern pharmacist oral exam is the final step to becoming a fully qualified pharmacist with general registration to practice independently in Australia. Following the Exam, candidates can check their results through the official Pharmacy Board of Australia channels.
